Government supplies a way of giving free personal care in your own home
21 Jan, 2010
The Personal Care at Home Bill went through the House of Commons and had its first reading in the House of Lords on 13th January 2010. The second reading will take place on the 1st of February before reaching the committee stage. During this stage all the individual clauses of the Bill will be discussed, examined and when agreement is reached the Bill moves into the report phase of the process.
The Bill has been designed to help the people with the greatest care needs to be offered personal care in their own homes. At the moment local councils are allowed to offer this service for only a limited time (6 weeks). The Bill will eliminate the time limit when the local authority deems that the individual is in the greatest need.
Around 400,000 people who need personal care in their own homes could benefit if this Bill passes into Law. With nearly 300,000 people guaranteed free care in their own home. Without doubt this looks like it could be the first step for Britain having a National Care Service.
